Residential and mixed-use developer, Telford Homes and its joint venture partner Poplar HARCA, appoint Way of Life Management Ltd to manage the Balfron Tower Build to Rent development as an operational rental asset, following the iconic building’s complete renovation.
Way of Life Management Ltd was chosen to manage the Build to Rent development in Tower Hamlets, given the company’s strong track record and extensive experience in London managing boutique and design-led rental properties.
Offering 140 modernised one-to-four-bedroom apartments in a Grade II* Listed, brutalist 28-storey building, the homes are available to rent now. Guided by architects Ab Rogers Design and Studio Egret West, the Balfron Tower building’s award-winning and heritage-led regeneration transformed the accommodation to provide homes that matched 21st-century living, while also paying homage to its 20th-century design status and meeting sustainability goals.
Refurbishing the pre-existing building also has associated circular economy benefits, by reducing the use of materials and minimising emissions embedded in building materials.
“Balfron Tower is an important landmark in east London’s skyline. I am really pleased that following the complete restoration to transform this historically significant building, it will soon be occupied. This will provide more, crucial new homes in Tower Hamlets.
“We believe this partnership with Way of Life, who share our focus on the importance of community, will be a real boost for the local area.”Paul Dooley, Director of Regeneration and Development, Poplar HARCA
In line with Goldfinger’s vision of ‘communities in the sky,’ Balfron Tower’s refurbishment saw both the transformation of the original concrete service tower into modernised living spaces, and the creation of Third Spaces, communal spaces that aims to create a strong sense of community.
Amenities at Balfron Tower include a cinema room, table tennis room, gym, private dining and cookery room, a roof terrace and work-from-home space. Residents will also benefit from the scheme’s location in Poplar in the East End, which is close to Canary Wharf, Stratford, Hackney Wick, and the London Docklands and Langdon Park DLR are a six-minute walk away.
There is also a thriving community on the scheme’s doorstep, with the Chrisp Street Market – a well-preserved slice of historic east London – which will shortly undergo a sensitive regeneration.
“We are proud to be a partner in this iconic regeneration project which has been refurbished in a way that is sensitive to its architectural heritage and sustainability. We are delighted to be working with Way of Life Management to bring Balfron Tower’s spectacular new homes to the rental market.”Anne Kavanagh, CEO, Telford Homes
