Investor, developer, and operator of rental communities Moda Group has officially opened its Moda, Hove Central Build to Rent development with the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Jackie O’Quinn.

The Mayor was joined by representatives from Moda, Brighton and Hove City Council members, and figures from the local community to celebrate the development, which represents years of collaboration between each involved party. Guests were given tours of the new neighbourhood and provided with a musical performance by local artist Elvie from BN1 Arts.

“This is a huge milestone for Moda and the wider Hove community. Even before construction began on site, we worked closely with Brighton & Hove City council and the local community to create a neighbourhood that would have a lasting impact for generations to come. As well as bringing much-needed new homes to Hove, we have already had a positive impact on the cultural life of the city and there is much more to come. I’d like to thank the Mayor for cutting the ribbon and officially declaring Moda, Hove Central open.”

Moda, Hove Central will includes 824 rental homes including 564 Build to Rent apartments, in a mix of studios to three-bedroom homes, all available at a range of price points. Amenities include a 24/7 gym with bookable personal trainer sessions, a dance and yoga studio, dedicated co-working spaces, residents’ lounges, private dining rooms and a cinema room. A cycle spa on the ground floor provides a space for bike storage and repair, ensuring residents will be able to travel around Brighton & Hove sustainably.

“After many years working so closely with Moda as a local ward councillor, I am delighted to have the honour to officially open this new neighbourhood. Moda, Hove Central has already had a positive impact on the local community through its close and much-valued engagement with it. I look forward to seeing the ambitious public art projects come to fruition over the coming months and years.”

The development will deliver six buildings, each offering residents unparalleled views of the sea, the South Downs and the surrounding city, with each home featuring the latest tech and Samsung integrated appliances. Moda has worked closely with Brighton & Hove City Council to offer 10% of homes at a discounted market rent, with residents enjoying full access to all the amenities on the site.

“Moda has been an engaged and thoughtful partner throughout the development of the new neighbourhood. The care that has been taken by the team has not ended at the boundary of their site but has extended through the whole community. They have contributed greatly to positive changes in the Hove Station area because of their openness and willingness to communicate and engage. I’m very pleased to be here and celebrate this milestone and look forward to continuing the good work together.”

More than 60% of the 8.8-acre neighbourhood is being transformed into public realm for both residents and the wider Hove community to enjoy. Moda has also been collaborating with Brighton and Hove City Council and Sussex-based designer and artist Richard Wolfströme on a £450,000 public art strategy to create a line-up of local and internationally acclaimed artists to deliver bespoke, community focused artworks to fill the new landscaped public spaces. The ambitious project will be the largest contribution to public space development ever seen from a private company in the city – with finished spaces due to be unveiled throughout 2024.

“Moda’s approach has been refreshing in that they do not adopt a build it, sell it and leave approach. Instead, Moda recognises that they are part of the community in Hove and have a stake in its future. There has been genuine community engagement with community stakeholders: from encouraging the investment of S106 funding to support local projects, to resident involvement in innovative arts installations, and ensuring we had access to the building contractors so that we had clear lines of communication and problems could be sorted out. This will be an important ongoing relationship and we look forward to working with Moda to further enhance our neighbourhood and it’s wellbeing.”

Renowned stonemasons George Griffiths and Edgar Ward are two of the selected artists involved in creating work for Moda, Hove Central. They will be delivering a second free workshop at Hove Museum of Creativity on 24 March, dedicated to the ancient art of stone carving. Attendees can hear about the opportunities and challenges of stone carving in the 21st century – and they will have a chance to get involved with stonework too.

“It is hugely rewarding to see Moda, Hove Central opens its doors to residents. Moda Living has been an engaged and committed partner throughout the planning and construction phases of this project, which I have no doubt will continue as the first residents move in and the neighbourhood takes its place as a long-term member of the Hove community. I am excited to welcome the new residents and help them to become valued new members of the neighbourhood here in Hove.”

The developer prides itself on fully integrating with each of its scheme’s areas. Moda has also commissioned numerous colourful murals painted by local artists on the boundary wall next to the site, co-funding the installation of the ‘Flight of the Langoustine’ sculpture on Hove Plinth on the seafront, alongside partnering with Brighton Festival as major sponsor for two years running.

“It’s a pleasure to be invited into Moda, Hove Central and see the fruition of years of dedicated work. Moda has already made a positive impact on the local community and there are many more plans in the pipeline that have been worked on with local people that will benefit Hove residents for years to come.”
