The overall Buchanan Wharf masterplan for the Tradeston site in Glasgow is well underway with works already started for Legal & General’s 324 Build to Rent apartments and an office accommodation for thousands of Barclays Bank employees.

The masterplan has now advanced with detailed office plans for an 11-storey high-profile building – designed by Halliday Fraser Munro. The building will include 170,000 sq ft of office space – and will have a variety of uses at ground and mezzanine floor levels including food and beverage outlets.

The office building has been described as a combination of stepped form, with different panel shapes and directions. This gives the building a unique rhythm, creating a dynamic façade that changes as you move around the building. This provides an effect of draped curtains, which when pulled back at key points, reveals river views.

The office building – labelled as an ‘exemplary gateway building’ will complement the two 18-storey Build to Rent towers. The scheme will include a gym, residents lounge, games room, a 4,250 sq ft communal roof terrace and dining space.

The development is located on the south bank of the iconic river Clyde, where Barclays’ new northern European hub is. The development is walking distance from Glasgow Central Station and the International Financial Services District – and is linked by the Tradeston Bridge.

Buchanan Wharf was named after Captain William Buchanan, Glasgow’s well-known steamboat owners. However last month, Barclays confirmed they were dropping the name ‘Buchanan’ due to concerns over its links to slavery. Following a petition signed by over 350 people urging the name change, Barclays has now called it the Barclays Glasgow Campus.

Once the development is complete, it will provide one million sq ft of Grade A office space, residential accommodation and a mix of local amenities and landscaped public realm.
